Born in an era when women were expected to marry and manage a household, Maude struggled to have interest in that. At a young age, she had fallen from a tree and broken her arm, and while she was in the hospital, she fell in infatuation with the handsome doctor, and more importantly, she fell in love with the idea of doctoring.
of course, her parents fought her silly notions, girls didn't do that sort of thing, even nursing was frowned upon, a strange notion for a girl named after an actress! Gasp! But in the wake of pioneers such as Elizabeth Blackwell and Emily Dunning, she forged on, saving her money and eventually finding a benefactor who helped fund medical school at Cornell University in New York.
Her internship was rough...like the ladies before her, she was pushed, given the shifts no one wanted, given back-to-back shifts, assigned graveyards to the ambulance service, anything to get her to reconsider. And there were times when she did...it was rough, but Maude wasn't a quitter, and she had a passion for the job, and besides, she didn't want to prove the nay-sayers wrong.
Of course, once she passed, it was hell to find a job, and worse when she had to relocate to Florida, where her sister had been committed to an asylum after a breakdown. While she would have preferred a job as a proper surgeon in a hospital, the only person who would take her on was Dr. Greyson Steele.
So far things have been going well, they have an amicable relationship, and she is gaining knowledge and confidence.
Although there are those patents that come in with unexplained injuries, some of which Dr. Steele whisks behind closed doors without explanation.
She has suspicions but can't afford to ask questions...
