Born: Wolverhampton, Great Britain
Career: Started off as a cabin boy on the old British Allen Line, then Canadian Pacific Steamships when they bought out the American routes in 1917. Of diminutive stature, George was always quick to get into a fight whenever his height was ridiculed, and he soon ended up in amateur boxing matches, often outclassing much bigger men.
Working in shipping on the Florida run, he made the acquaintance of local fight promoter J.D. 'Pappy' Bramwell, who found the titchy Englishman a useful hand for a number of jobs and an excellent coach for his growing stable of professional fighters.
