Tommy's father was an Irish immigrant who came to America to help gain support for Irish home rule. He met Maureen Farley and married her, and they raised Tommy up to appreciate America's democracy and freedom.
When America entered the Great War in 1917, he felt compelled to join the army even though it would mean delaying his education. When he returned from Europe, he completed university and joined the Bureau of investigation.
He's skeptical of the good he's doing as a Prohibition agent and isn't convinced that bootleggers are in the wrong.
